Captain Kevin Clark              Firefighter Gilbert Frew      Firefighter Bill Greeley

On January 5, 2011, Capt. Kevin Clark and Firefighters Gilbert Frew and Bill Greeley were awarded the Lima Fire Department’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor. The award was for their heroic efforts that saved the life of a Lima woman trapped in an apartment fire at 305 E. 9th St .

In the early morning hours of November 9th, 2010, firefighters were called to the scene of an apartment fire. Upon arrival, firefighters were told there was a woman still inside. Firefighter Frew entered the apartment with a charged hose line followed by Capt. Clark and Firefighter Greeley. The firefighters heard the woman yelling for help down the hallway. Heat and flames were blocking her exit. Firefighter Frew single-handedly held off the flames while Capt. Clark and FF Greeley found the woman and pulled her out to safety. The victim suffered burns to over 25% of her body. Captain Clark stated afterwards that it was not just the three men, but the entire crew on duty that night working as a team which allowed for the successful rescue.

“Without hesitation or regard for their own safety, these individuals placed themselves in harm’s way and displayed great courage in the performance of their duties,” said Assistant Chief Greg Kirkendall,

Firefighter Terry Sroufe was selected as the 2010 Lima Noon Sertoma Firefighter of the Year.  Sertoma member and retired Lima Fire Chief Jack Brookman presents Terry with the Firefighter of the Year plaque at a ceremony at the Old Barn Out Back on October 26th, 2010.
